Female Table Tennis – Preliminaries vs Sheares Hall & Eusoff Hall

Written by: Adriel Leong

Table tennis, also known as ping-pong, is a sport where two or four players hit a lightweight orange or white hollow ball back and forth using table tennis rackets; across a large blue table. While the game objective may seem simple enough, the game certainly is not; as our KE girls showed during their matches against Sheares Hall and Eusoff Hall on Thursday (27 Jan) and Friday (28 Jan) respectively.

Kent Ridge Hall was to be the setting where our girls’ skills and the accumulation of countless hours of hard practice would be pitted against the best that the other NUS Halls had to offer in the ping pong arena.

On the 24th of January, Kent Ridge Hall (KR) and King Edward VII Hall (KE) met at the SRC volleyball courts to battle it out in their first match of the IHG season. Team captain Annie was doing her best to rally the team together, understanding that a high morale is critical for the team to be able to fight well. She started off with a pre-match talk, after which the team huddled up and cheered, their voices echoing resolutely through the court. The first match saw Annie, Fang Chee, Jobina, Hui Ning, Geraldine and Christina on the courts, ready to play their very best for KE.

IHG 2011 Volleyball (M) – KE vs RH

Spirits were high as KE’s male volleyball team warmed up in preparation for their showdown with RH, held on the 24th of January at the SRC volleyball courts. Our male volleyballers were looking to put the disappointment of losing the opening game behind them. No one in the KE team seemed short of focus or purpose during the warm up, as each member queued up to send some ferocious spikes into the opponent’s court. In contrast, the RH team sought to intimidate our players before the game even started, roaring loudly whenever one of their players made a well-placed spike.

Sunday mornings are usually quiet and relaxing affairs after a busy week of school. That was, however, not the case for KE’s Touch Rugby Team. Assembling at the Sports and Recreational Centre Field, both the Males and Females team sought for honour and glory for the hall. Both the guys and the girls would be playing 5 matches over the course of the day against the other halls. Each game consisted of two halves with the guys playing 10 minutes per half and the girls 8 minutes per half with a 2 minute break in between.

On the 22nd of January, KE’s male volleyball team squared off against EH in the first match of their current IHG season, played at EH’s multipurpose courts. Despite being up against relatively stronger opponents (and right in their backyard, no less), our male players were in high spirits in the pre-match warm up, hitting some well-placed spikes and sharing some lighthearted jokes with one another. As dusk approached and the game was about to start, team captain, Jerwin gathered the entire team aside for a final pre-match talk. The team then rounded it off with a resounding “KE…Whoosh!”, before Jerwin then led the first team, which also included Kelvin, Kaixiong, Gabriel, Songjie and Jordan, onto the court.

All set for the game!

The female handball semi final match played against Eusoff Hall on 19th of January could only be described as exhilarating.  Although we did not win, the girls certainly played with style.  I was sure everyone present was deeply moved by the surge of excitement and enthusiasm shown.

IHG 10/11 Squash (M) Semi-Finals – KE vs TH: A Nail-biting Finish

Arriving at the squash courts on the 18th of January brought back painful memories of last year’s IHG. At the same stage of the competition, and against the same opponent, KE lost by a mere whisker to TH after a valiant effort. This year, the rivalry resumed with the promise of a nail-biting clash between the two teams. Some of last year’s players, including Kwan Rong, Chong Guang and Byron were among the old hands present in this year’s teams. Added to the fray were several new players; fresh, eager and determined to bring glory to their halls.

On the 16th of January, the KE male squash team achieved a victory against KR with an overall score of 5-0 in its second match this season!

Having lost to EH in the previous match, the KE team certainly knew that only a win would give them the chance to advance to the next stage of the competition. With that determination and burning desire to triumph, the players were all fired up and ready to fight. Even their warm up session was so intense that one could have mistaken it to be the real match!

Squash (F) against Sheares Hall on 18/1/11

The KE7 Squash Girls!

Due to an oversight by KE Press, the aforementioned match on the 16th of January was not covered. We sincerely apologize for the error. The match resulted in a 1-4 loss for KEVII, but the girls definitely did not go down without a fight, as the following indivisual game scores prove:

Game 1. Yu Wei. Score: Lost 7-11, 6-11
Game 2. Sophia. Score: Lost 2-11, 5-11
Game 3. Mabel (Captain). Score: 11-1, 11-2
Game 4. Meilani. Score: 10-12, 4-11
Game 5. Theng Wai. Score: 11-9, 10-12, 12-14

When asked for a few comments, Captain Mabel particularly singled two players who especially stood out that day as stellar examples of the never-say-die fighting spirit: Yu Wei who played her matches despite being sick that day, and Meilani, who pressed on despite sustaining a hip injury.

Swimming Carnival – A No Sweat Victory

Lane 7

“Swimmers, take your marks.”  All the KEVIIans that were present at the SRC pool leaned forward at the edge of the seats at the bleachers.  They were all anxious as the female swimmers from all the six halls of residence took their stand at the starting block.  KE swimmers were lined up at lane 7, all ready to go.  The captain, Sophia Tan bulleted into the water as the referee signaled for swimmers to plunge.  The other swimmers included Pei Yi, Irene Wong and Ellie.  Each swimmer plunged gracefully into the water as their team mate reached the 50 metres mark.  It was a tough and nail biting race as our swimmer and Temasek titan raced neck to neck in the last lap.  It was a tough fight with us ending up with a second place in the 4 x 50m freestyle relay.
