IHG 2011 Basketball (M) – KE vs EH

Written by: Gavin Cheah

If there has to be only one IHG sport that is to be described as exciting and action-packed, it must be basketball. It was truly an exhilarating experience watching the match against Eusoff Hall, played on 6th February 2011. Our main players for the day were Hu Dong (Captain), Jerwin, Da Long, Zi Zheng, Li Hao and Dong Yizhou, not to mention the numerous supporters from KE7 who came down to cheer them on. After an initial cheer by both teams, the games began.

KE vs KR, 22-28

Chills went down spectators’ spines as the KE girls laid their opponents to waste on the court by running a streak of four baskets. Each team was on the edge of their seats, cheering at the top of their lungs. It was the most thrilling girls’ basketball game KE had had so far, and they were not about to give up.

The atmosphere was not like this initially, though. Five minutes prior to the start of the match, after warming up and shooting a few hoops, Julia rallied her team and gave a quick briefing. The team was clearly nervous, as all she got in response to her unbridled war cry was a steel wall of deafening silence. Unfazed, Julia initiated a team huddle, screamed wildly, and the familiar “KE whoosh!” resounded throughout the courts. Then the starting five strode confidently onto the court.

The girls forming a strong wall of defense

The first quarter saw Julia, Fang Chee, Hui Ann, Ting Wen and Geri Foo as the starting five. Seconds after the ball was tossed, KE was in possession, and Julia quickly ran in to attempt a three-pointer. Thereafter, the initial pace of the game was slow, although Fang Chee caught some KR players off guard and managed a few steals. Yi Lin then substituted for Geri. Within minutes, team dynamics started to kick in, with Yi Lin and Julia grabbing rebounds and Ting Wen trying a few daring passes. After putting up a strong defense for almost the whole quarter, a tactical play by the team saw Fang Chee putting in the first basket for KE, to result in a score 2-6 in favour of KR.

The second quarter was slightly more spirited than the first. As soon as game play resumed, Julia banked on her highly accurate shooting skills to pocket a beautiful three-pointer with an assist from Yi Lin. For a few minutes, the scoreboard did not change, as both teams pitted their stealing and rebounding skills against one another. In response, Michael, KE’s basketball captain for the guys’ team, was on the sidelines cheering KE on, exclaiming that it was “hao qiu” (Chinese for good ball play) and that they were putting up “good defense”. Interestingly, Yi Lin and Ting Wen formed a devastating duo, passing swiftly and nimbly to each other and devouring all who stood in their way. In one instance, Yi Lin, Fang Chee and Rachel (who was recently substituted) fought hard for rebounds, making three or four successive attempts to lay up. This stepped up the pace of the game, following which jump balls abounded and possession changed at least four times in a couple of minutes. Not to discredit KR, they indeed matched us well as #21 scored a nice lay up assisted by #10. With 25 seconds left in the second quarter, KR launched an all-out attack with brisk passes and a few shots on target. In spite of this, our players stopped all their attempts textbook-style to end the first half with a very respectable score of 5-10 in favour of KR.

Of strategies and giving moral support

During the half-time break, our players caught their breath and listened to Julia as she strategized for the next quarter. The welfare representatives finally arrived, bringing refreshments to restore our bruised and battle-worn fighters. At the same time, substitute players Yun Lan, Wan Lee, Steph, Hui Ning and Wang Lu encouraged their team members as they geared up for yet another battering half.

Yi Lin, Rachel, Julia, Fang Chee and Hui Ann started the third quarter with renewed vigour and intensity. One could feel them bringing on their game, as it was before. Not to be outdone, the KR team also stepped up their speed of play. However, our players clambered back so aggressively that the feisty Fang Chee, in a bid to block a shot, fouled one of the KR players to concede two free throws, of which only one was converted. Yi Lin, a few minutes down the road, also inadvertently fouled to concede one successfully converted free throw. Nevertheless, she more than made up for it by swishing in a lovely three-pointer, which was the sole basket for the third quarter. This was despite KR’s clear advantage of sporting a well-built power forward, #24, who would have easily blocked Yi Lin with her tall stature if not for Yi Lin’s lightning agility and impeccable shooting skills. The quarter ended with a score of 8-18, with KE needing to play catch up.

KE Whoosh!

But let us not dwell too much on the third quarter, for it paled miserably in comparison to what transpired in the fourth. As soon as it began, it was titillating in every sense of the word. Our five girls put up iron defense against the initial KR attack, and they lost possession of the ball in the blink of an eye. Here began the utter destruction of KR’s hoop. The plays were not dramatic breakaways, like some of you might have imagined. They were team strategies, thought out carefully and prudently before the match, and put into practice masterfully. Yet, strategy was one thing, and execution was another. After some fast passing, it was Ting Wen who drove in and shot. Each of the two points she earned incited euphoria beyond what strategy could have envisioned. Once again, they regained possession from KR and charged down the court, with Ting Wen, once again, trying a three-pointer. Swish. It was beautiful. At this point the score was 13-18, and every KEVIIan present cheered like there was no tomorrow. As if this wasn’t enough for the KR players to stomach, another steal and offensive play culminated in Julia’s three-point try. Swish again. The score was 16-18. It was indeed a killing spree and the girls were not about to give up at all.

Yi Lin given two free throws

At this point, the KR team called a timeout, thinking our momentum would be disrupted. They were quite wrong, however. After some ball banter, with KR fouling and a jump ball in order, KE launched their fourth attack of the quarter. Yi Lin drove in aggressively and put in another two pointer for KE to equalize with KR at 18-18. By this time, the sound of KE supporters drowned everything else, for a game like this was a rare opportunity. However, KR responded belligerently, with each of their players marking our girls individually. It was a man-on-man (or woman-on-woman :P ) defense tactic and the intensity was off the charts. Even as KR scored two successive lay ups, our girls did not relent, and Yi Lin paid them back equally. Moments later, a timeout was called. This was a significant time for the team, as this level of play was unprecedented and they were in high spirits. The captain, Julia, cried out to the team: “Do you all want this?!” The team replied in a resounding “YES!!!” Undoubtedly, it was a hair-raising experience for KEVIIans present at the game to see our girls display such perseverance and tenacity. When the game resumed, however, our girls kept getting called for travelling for some reason. Perhaps it was the referee who was suddenly stricter given the narrow margin of score, or just the overall tension that made our players overly enthusiastic, so much so that they ran with the ball! In any case, after a very applaudable three-point basket by #9 of KR, a couple of fouls earned Yi Lin two converted free throws in all, bringing the score to 22-25 in KR’s favour. As much as KE tried to played catch up, another three-pointer by the same #9 player brought the score to 22-28, sealing KE’s fate. Nevertheless, last tries to score saw praiseworthy dribbling by Ting Wen and valiant attempts to break KR’s intense defense. On the other side of the coin, Fang Chee and Rachel continued to defend well in the last 30 seconds, and forced KR to awkwardly fling the ball out of the court two times in a row. Before long, the game came to a conclusion, with the final score at KE 22-28 KR.

Of course, at the end, both teams displayed good sportsmanship by exchanging cheers and thanking the umpires. It was a fantastic end to the best game the KE basketball girls played this season. Even though they didn’t beat KR, their stunning performance during the game merited more than victory.

All smiling widely knowing they did their best

Congratulations to the team for such a brilliant game! :D

Basketball (M), 2nd Preliminary Round: KE vs TH, 29- 67

The KE7 male basketball team played their second IHG match against Temasek Hall on Sunday evening. Even though the team’s quest for the championship has come to an end with a 29-67 loss, the team bonded as a whole and definitely showed great improvement and potential. The game against TH was in general better than the previous game against Eusoff and the reason for this was very modestly explained by the Captain of the team, Michael, who said that the TH team was less experienced than the EH team.

The Reds started with Michael, Jerwin, Lihao, Ying Long and Zheng Hang. KE started more aggressively than TH, which was a good thing because it showed the team’s eagerness to get possession and try scoring. Temasek Hall on the other hand played with a cool and relaxed attitude and managed to dominate the scoreboard. TH played well in the beginning and KE found TH’s gameplay very tricky. However, towards the middle of the match, KE started catching up.

KE WHOOOSH!

cool googles!

The match was played at a general quick pace. TH led from the start and continued to lead throughout. The guys from Temasek were on the whole faster, but it took them a lot more than just plain speed to get past the KE defence. Wei Qing made his presence felt strongly in the KEVIIan defence. Jerwin’s play was exceptional. He grabbed the ball from Temasek’s possession a number of times and dashed down the court to attack. He led the team into a number of attacks repeatedly. Lihao’s shots were impecable as usual. Ying Long’s style complimented almost everyone else’s style and he was able to mobilise the ball significantly in the opponent’s half of the court.

chop!

In the second half of the game, KE came back much better and scored a lot more points. Players from both sides started to show signs of exhaustion in this half. There were a number of substitutions and as fatigue started to set in, a large number of fouls surfaced too. KE suffered a lot on the foul front. The aggressiveness they had been displaying decreased as the players ended up committing too many fouls. KE’s defence was still quite good. Early into the game, KE realized that the Temasek shooting was getting slightly sloppy and KE seized this weakness. The KE team focused on keeping the TH players at a distance away from the basket and pressured them to shoot, easily claiming the rebound which followed on numerous occasions.

you are not going to stop me!!

you are not getting past me!

In this match, KE played in a more systematic and organised manner and thus were able to restrict and control the ball movement better. The match ended with Lihao scoring 12 points, Michael 5 points, Jerwin 10 points and Wei Qing 2 points. At the end of the game Michael made a few positive comments about the KE guys’ basketball team, “The substitutions were organised in such a manner that the players got enough rest and enough time to play. Thus, nearly everyone got to play and because of this, the players were able to play more efficiently.” He also said that the freshmen were very eager to play, which showed that they were both passionate and confident about the game. He concluded, saying that he was very impressed by the improvement made by the team over the year and is hopeful that the team will win the gold in the next IHG Season. We definitely appreciate the effort put in by the Basketball Team and all the other IHG teams over the past one year in their trainings and we know that KE will never stop in their pursue for excellence. Go KE!!

KE Press would like to express our gratitude to Michael for providing his valuable insight. Thank you Michael! :)

Basketball (M) Preliminary Round, KE vs EH, 27-67

The KE basketball team played its first game of this year’s IHG against Eusoff Hall, one day after beating EH in a remarkable volleyball game. One could see a few similar faces from the EH volleyball team and basketball team. It was the same case for KE. However, this time around, it was our turn to lose. EH won the game with a final score of 67- 27.

KE's Basketball Team (Males)

KE's Basketball Team (Males)

The first quarter started with the playing five being our captain Michael, Jerwin, Zheng Hang, Lihao and Ying Long. EH quickly rushed to a 9-2 lead. A good shot by Lihao made it 9-4. However, EH immediately struck back with a 3 pointer. EH then got 2 free throws which they converted, followed by 2 points from KE. At the end of the first period, EH lead 14-6. One got the feeling that perhaps KE was not spending enough time in the EH zone. Our attacks were always short, with a maximum of 2-3 passes before someone took a shot. In contrast, EH would always take their time in the KE zone, often making a string of passes that could last till even 10 passes before someone took a shot.

The second period started a bit better for us. We managed to prevent EH from scoring in the first 2 minutes. However, a foul by one of our players on an EH player started the scoring for EH again. Quickly, the score became 26-10. One of the team members, Michael Loh, commented that the EH players were really fast. Jerwin apparently noticed this, and he tried to speed up the game. He would always take the ball from KE’s zone and come rushing to the EH zone. He would try to pass to someone or try to take a shot. But the shots were just not going in for us. A very nice behind-the-head shot by an EH player made the score 34-14 towards the end of the second period.

jerwin in action

The third period was particularly bad for us. Right from the start, EH went on a basket scoring streak. With one basket after another basket, EH made the score 46-14. KE took a time out, in the hopes of changing the momentum of the game. It worked, to some extent. At 49-14, Lihao took a shot which hit the rim. He then took his own rebound and took a shot again, which went in to make it 49-16. The third period ended with a score of 54-18.

going up strong against our opponents

The fourth period was the best for KE. We managed to restrict the EH players to some extent, and were able to score 9 points. The match ended on a mini good note for KE, as Jerwin made a nice run and then passed to Ying Long, who took a nice shot to get the last basket of the match. The match ended with a score of 67 – 27.

KE whoosh!

In the end, all one could say is that the Eusoff team was just stronger than the KE team, who put up a brave fight. We got outplayed in this game. Still, our team should remember that tomorrow is a new day and may bring us different fortunes. We showed heart today. As long as we play with heart, results are sure to follow. Go for it, KE basketball!

Basketball (F) Preliminary Round: KE vs TH, 20-51

How does participating in sports contribute to one’s personal development? Why, it’s the skills, of course. However, based on my personal observation, what one can gain is so much more than that tangible aspect. Disciplined, determined and a strong team spirit – this is how I would describe the KE female basketball team.

our fierce warriors!

our female warriors!

The team met at 4.30pm to set off to the basketball court at TH. For the record, TH has six IVP players in their team. Despite that, the fighting spirit was painted on the face of every KE player and they had no qualms about playing at their opponent’s home ground. The blazing sun showed no mercy even at 5.30pm while the girls were warming up and practising their shots. TH was quiet and looked quite empty except for the residents who occasional walked past the corridor of the block overlooking the court. (Maybe it’s the weekend? :P ) KE’s team of 14 players led by the captain, Julia was all ready for the match until she received a call and announced to the team that there might be a delay although the match should rightfully start at 6.30pm.

Fortunately, it was a slight delay and the match started at around 7pm with the skies getting darker above a court of two distinct shades of red and white. KE’s first quarter team line-up was Julia, Yi Lin, Fang Chee, Hui Ann and Rachel. At the blow of the whistle, the match started to gain momentum almost immediately. TH scored within the first 10 seconds! KE was just as determined to play it right and Fang Chee scored within the first minute! There were many times in the game where the referee had to call for change of ball possession due to travelling mistakes by TH. Our feisty Yi Lin could even manage a 3-pointer despite the tall and lean TH players defending her up front. In the middle of the game, there was a brief commotion due to miscommunication between the referee and TH players who wanted a substitution. Other than that, the game went on smoothly with KE supporters who were all hyped up as the match got more interesting. We put up an awesome play with good passes that TH could hardly cut in. We were accurate and confident with our 3-pointers, with stints perfected by Julia and Yi Lin that brought KE to a score of 10-13 against TH. The first quarter ended with a splendid score which was on par with TH if it had not been for them who scored three points during the last minute of the quarter.

very much into the game

The second quarter of the match saw Rachel from KE displaying good defence. Ting Wen on the sideline was focusing on the game and did appropriate substitutions when necessary. She kept the spirit of the team up by constantly giving instructions to the players on court. Even though TH was awarded a free throw, (much to their dismay) they did not score. The pace of the game was still as fast and furious. It was common to see TH doing fast breaks in the second quarter of the game. However, their hopes were shattered as the player was either travelling or blocked by KE’s strong wall of defence. This quarter ended with TH leading 21-14.

The third quarter of the match started on a positive note after tips and pointers given by Ting Wen during the half-time. There was hope in the eyes of KE supporters as they followed the projectile motion of the ball during a shot by Yi Lin – she had attempted a 3-pointer. Despite the rebound, KE’s fighting spirit remained strong, and Julia was being very optimistic on court. Though KE did not manage to score in the next few minutes, they definitely made good use of the zone defence technique. TH continued their lead with a 39-14 score.

ting wen giving tips

During the last quarter, KE requested for a timeout, and Julia strategised some quick changes for attacking.  With constant substitution by TH, they were able to play man-to-man defence to pressure our players. One of the opponents committed a foul and Julia was given three free throws, fully optimised to our advantage as she scored. Well done Julia! The game drew to an end within an hour with the final score of 20-51 to TH.

All is not lost, however. Many will agree with me in saying that this was one of the most promising female basketball matches for KE over the past few years!  The basketball team has certainly risen to greater heights, and we eagerly await to seem them in action again this Tuesday, in their 2nd preliminary match against KR :D

The last preliminary basketball match (F) for KE Hall drew to an end on 5th February.

It was a great show by the female basketball team, led by Geraldine Foo. Our opponent that night was the KR team who defeated Sheares Hall last Thursday. The first quarter was played by Geraldine, Julia, Hui Ann, Zhang Wen and Fang Chee. Our players were so spirited that the KR team could hardly attack smoothly into ours court. The 1st two score of our team were contributed by the team leader, Geri, when she successfully grabbed both the free throw scores which were given due to an opponent’s foul. For the 1st 5 minutes, our basketball team was able to score 4-4. Due to lack of stamina, Zhang Wen was substituted by Rachel. The team continued the display of the power of unity until the the end of the 1st quarter, although we ended up with scoring 8 points, while the opponent 11. However, during the 2nd quarter, the opponent managed to distant the gap by scoring 17-8.

After a spirited KE cheer by all the players, the 2nd half began. Obviously, our girls’ team were not consistent enough in playing full court due to the lack of stamina. 1 score was contributed by Hui Ann, from the free throw during the 3rd quarter. The final score of the third quarter has somehow diminished the girls’ desire to proceed into the semi-finals, as we could hardly catch up with the opponent’s score of 25. The whole match came to an end with the final score of 9-40.

“Although winning is a bonus, winning isn’t everything. This may sound cliche but I really have seen improvement in all of your stamina and basketball skills.” This is what was emphasised by Julia, the new basketball captain, who has persistently trained the team together with Geri.

Although our basketball team lost the game, what inspired us the most is the process of training. Before the match, the girls knew that they were not as experienced as the other hall team, but still, they did not lose their self-confidence. Intensive trainings did improve their skills and fighting spirit, but what was most important was the invaluable bonds built up within this small group of KE girls.

Of course, instead of indulging in depression, the girls went for a celebration at McDonald’s after the match, as a token of appreciation for themselves for the hard work donp throughout the past few months. Lastly, I’d like to say Great job Geri, Julia, and the whole female basketball team!!

“I can accept defeat but I cannot accept giving up,” Michael Jordan once said.

This clearly resembles our KEVII female basketball team – the battle is not over yet. The first match against Sheares Hall was undeniably a tough one. Our team lost with a final score of 28-9. But there is still hope in this Thursday’s match against Kent Ridge Hall in order to qualify for the semi-finals.

The KEVII female team entered the courts with high spirits, fully focused. The game started and the basketball (literally the ball itself) was ready on the go! So intense was the game that within the first few minutes, the referee blew the whistle as a member from the opposing team committed a foul. Unfortunately, our team did not score from the free throws which were awarded. Sheares scored the first point in the first quarter of the match. It ended with an 11-0 score with Sheares leading the game.

dsc01250

The cheer during the first quarter break did the trick. Two more free throws awarded to Julia Lee from our team were fully utilised as she scored amidst the background of loud cheers from KEVII supporters. In this quarter of the game, KEVII team members managed to display good defence and protected their respective zones well. Perhaps, it was due to the several player substitutions in our team that affected the opponent’s initial strategies. With a notably well display of skills and teamwork, KEVII team gained 6 points, closing the second quarter of the game with 16-6.

During the third quarter, the whole game gradually became full with force and power. It was infectious, as it even spread to the supporters – cheers from Sheares Hall were reverberating across the court. The KEVII team attempted many incredibly nice shots, from near and far but were to no avail as the basketball disappointingly rebounded off the rim. It was as though they were just magnets of opposite polarities. However, we were awarded a point from a free throw that led to the score of 22-7 at the end of the quarter.

dsc01254

The pace in the last quarter was set mostly by the opponent as they were seen playing man-to-man, guarding most of our best players. But KEVII proved them wrong as Geraldine Foo, the captain of the team managed to get the ball from the opponents’ zone, sprinted all the way to the other end of the court and attempted a successful shot. 28 points to Sheares Hall and 9 points to King Edward VII Hall – that was how the match ended.

dsc01267

“We all did our best today, and that is what matters most. Perhaps luck is just not on our side,” Geraldine commented after the match.

The KEVII female basketball team will definitely go all out for the coming Thursday match and we wish them all the best.
