On the first day on the month of February, the netball team played their first match for this IHG season of 10/11. The match was held at the SRC court and it was against the Kent Ridge team. Despite having less experienced players than KR, our girls, together with our recruits from the KE basketball team, put up a valiant fight all the way to the end and eventually conceded victory to KR with the score at 10-29.

Netball, 2nd Preliminary Round : KE vs TH, 2-42

21st Jan 2010 saw our very own KE netball girls’ second preliminary match against Temasek Hall (TH). The match was held at the Raffles Hall netball court. Witnessing the startling speed and strong passes of our opponents during the warm-up exercises, it was no doubt that the fight against them would be a tough one. Nonetheless, our girls bravely took up the challenge and fought brilliantly!

warming up for the game

KE WHOOSH!!

The first quarter started around 6.30pm. First up were Jeana (C), Geraldine (GD), Jenny (GA), Hui Ning (GS), Xin Lei (GK), Annie (WA) and Mae Yue (WD). At the blow of the whistle, TH’s centre started the game. Attack was really swift as the first goal was scored within the blink of an eye. Recovering from the unpleasant surprise, KE fought back, trying to gain back the point they have lost. As the match progressed, our girls made every effort to block TH’s intensive attacks, gain possession of the ball, and to create scoring opportunities—Xin Lei blocked off several attacks; Mae Yue got back several lost balls and Jenny narrowly missed a goal. The continuous relay of attacks and defenses got the crowd from both KE and TH alternating between cheering and holding their breaths. However, TH proved to be a really strong opponent as their girls soon gained control of the game with their rapid attacks, accurate shots as well as strong defence. By the end of the first quarter, TH was leading by a score of 16-0.

great defense!

The second quarter saw a change of players. Sophia (GK), Geraldine(WD), Mae Yue (WA), Xin Lei (GD), Hui Ning (GS), Jeana (C) & Jenny (GA). This quarter saw our girls gaining energy and putting up an exciting fight against TH. The pace of the game increased multifold. KE’s attacks got faster and fiercer while our defense stabilized. The excitement intensified as Jeana got hold of the ball, passed it to Jenny, then to Hui Ning, Mae Yue and finally back to Hui Ning, who remained composed under the pressure and scored the 1st goal! It was truly a long struggle to get past the tall defenders of TH but this goal definitely boosted the morale of the team. An excellent display of perfect teamwork! The 2nd quarter ended with a score of 21-1.

fast and furious play

For the 3rd quarter, Hiromi substituted Hui Ning as GS. Both the GA and GS of TH proved to be amajor barrier to our girls catching up with the scores as both of them were really tall and super accurate with their shots. It was almost like a definite goal whenever either of them aimed for the net. In addition, their defenders GD and GK are similarly tall and over towering our players, making scoring a highly difficult task. Jenny tried for a shot again; this time attempting a far shot to get past the height of the GD and GK but missed by a whisker. Nevertheless, it formulated a new strategy for our team which was the use of long/high passes. Their efforts finally paid off when Jenny got the ball near the goal post. She aimed, the ball bounced off, Hiromi retrieved it and shot… GOAL!!! Screams of exhilaration resounded through the court. Morale got higher with the goal scored and the game intensified as we exerted a greater pressure on the opposing team with our increased speed and accuracy. Sophia did an excellent block just before the quarter ended with a score of 29-2.

The last quarter was a test of perseverance for both teams, with both sides tired out from the preceding three quarters. During the fouth quarter, Wang Rong played GS, Geraldine—GD, Jeana—C, Sophia—GK, Ginny—WD, Hazel—WA and Xin Lei—GA. Geraldine did a few beautiful saves but TH’s attack was just too powerful. In a brave attempt to prevent the ball from falling into the hands of the super accurate TH’s shooter, Sophia fell down and had to be substituted out. As the game neared the end, our girls continued to exert pressure on TH while increasing pace. However, it was still too hard to gain an upper hand in the match, which ended with a tally of 42-2 to TH.

Despite losing the game, we are still extremely proud of our girls as they have really tried their very best, exerting every bit of energy they have and persevering to the very end. Their unwavering spirit and excellent teamwork were especially touching. Great job girls!

On 12 February, the KE Netball Team played its second preliminary match against Temasek Hall. Despite facing a stronger opponent team, our female warriors put up a brave fight before conceding victory to TH with the score of 3-26.

As the match went underway, both teams fought hard to gain possession and to create opportunities to score. Our girls made every effort to block their opponent’s shots and passes, while aggressively counter-attacking when there were chances. Nonetheless, the TH players were obviously more accurate with their passes and they attacked at a faster pace. The first quarter ended with TH leading 8-1.

The second quarter saw TH widening the lead to 13-1. Right from the beginning, the TH Goal Shooter (GS) proved to be the greatest headache for the KE defenders as she was amazingly sharp with her shots. At the other end of the court, KE had few chances to take aim at the net, but unfortunately those attempts did not materialise into point gains.

In the third quarter, our players made a few good attempts to score and their efforts finally paid off when Hazel scored the second point for the team. TH continued with their waves of attack but our girls did their best to break their momentum. KE was trailing 2-22 by the end of the third quarter.

Despite staring at a yawning point gap, our girls continued to play on with great commitment and teamwork in the last quarter. Hui Ning scored another point for KE in the fourth quarter before the match ended with the final tally standing at 26-3 to TH.

KEVII’s Netball team played against Raffles Hall on Monday 9 February in their first preliminary match. After their warm-ups, the match against RH began.

RH drew first blood, hence leading in points from the start. Within 5 minutes though, KE managed to equalise the score 1-1. It was during the first few minutes that KE got an inkling of the strength of the Goal Shooter (GS) and Goal Attack (GA) of RH. RH scored two more goals before KE’s Jennyline scored, making the score 2-3. Throughout the 1st half, KE kept trying looking for opportunities to score but to RH kept snatching back the ball. 1st quarter ended with 2-5, RH leading.

KE’s line-up for the 2nd quarter changed a bit, with Balpreet replacing Yu Wei as Goal Keeper (GK) among others. KE managed to score one shot throughout the 2nd quarter, whilst RH kept clocking in the points. In many instances, KE’s GK caused obstruction, hence RH managed to get good shots as our GK cannot defend. KE netball girls also lacked communication throughout the match, causing some passes to be missed. With RH scoring rapidly, the score became 3-19.

A short break was taken before the 3rd quarter. Geraldine Teo, the captain, took this time to point out the mistakes of the team members. Jeanaline also gave tips and pointers on how to overcome their opponents. More substitutions were made too. A KE Whoosh! was cheered and the 3rd quarter began. It started with Hui Ning scoring which was greeted with jubilant cheers from KEVII supporters. RH soon came back strong and managed to score again when Yu Wei (GK) accidentally lost the ball. After a few more shots from RH, Hui Ning managed to score again after 3 rebounds of the ball from the net.

In the 4th quarter, it was already clear that RH will win eventually due to the big gap in points. However, KE netball girls did not give up and still put in their all to counter RH’s swift GS and her dead accurate shots. Kudos to the defence players in KE, like Fei Fan, who strived hard to block the ball from the RH players. One more shot was scored by KE, bringing the eventual score to 6-37.

Although KEVII netball team lost this match by quite a large margin, the effort they put in is definitely commendable especially since RH was quite a strong opponent. The girls can learn from their mistakes and improve on them during their next preliminary match against Temasek Hall on Thursday. Go KEVII netball girls!
