KE’s female Squash team played their first IHG match against TH on the 12th of January 2010. There was enormous support for both Halls. The spectator area outside Court 5 of the MPSH Squash Courts was divided into white and red. Not only did the audience consist of teammates, there was also a huge fan gathering. It was enchanting to see the support offered by the Hall mates towards their respective teams. Gripping games, inspiring comebacks and enormous encouragement from the audience and teammates were the essence of the game. Despite the strong fight put up by KE, they were overpowered by the girls in white and black. The final score was 3 – 2 to TH.
Theng Wai started for KE and her first serve was a very perfect one. It left the player from TH clueless. Theng Wai quickly powered her way through another couple of points to increase her lead, but it did not take long for her opponent to sneak in a few quick points. Before anyone knew what had happened, TH had won the set with a score of 11 – 5. The second set began soon with a serve from TH that was neatly returned by KE, but unfortunately dropped near the right corner by TH, making it nearly impossible for Theng Wai to reach and TH took the lead. The game that followed after this was very exciting and very close. There were some unbelievable drops, one of which was given the adjective ‘sexy’ by some people in the audience (It was hard to comprehend whether the adjective was for the drop shot or the players). The game became more exciting, when both players started to feel the pressure mount and ended up serving out of bounds. There was a stroke which went in KE’s favor at the point where the score was 5 – 8 with TH in the lead. It took some time for TH to win the set with a score of 11 – 8. Theng Wai had put a very powerful, literally powerful, fight.
The captain, Yu Wei was on crutches, but that did not stop her from cheering her team. The excitement of the games affected her and she urged her teammates to put their best foot forward as the match progressed. Janice was the second player for KE. This game was very different in comparison to the first game in the sense that most of it was played at the front of the court. The first was a walk through for Janice as she served her way through the opponent. She finished the game 11 – 4 with great ease and confidence. The victory in the first set saw her as a more confident player. Her elegance and skillful play was noteworthy. She started the second set and lost the first point to TH. She leveled the score with nice backhand towards the right corner, to make it 1 – 1. This was followed by brilliance and true mastery of the game. For the next 6 points, all Janice had to do was to serve and wait. Her serves were so well placed that her opponent stood no chance. She eased her way to 7 – 1. For the next couple of points she had to do a bit more than just serve; nevertheless she won the second set with a score of 11 – 4. The match now stood poised at one game apiece.
Deborah was the third player from KE. The awaited serve from TH was lobbed high up in the air which took Deborah by surprise, but she managed to connect the racket and ball, and carry the game forward. The opponent’s game was characterized by high serves and keeping the ball up. Whenever KE dropped the ball low, KE mostly got the points. The first set ended with a score of 11 – 7 to TH. TH started the second set with another high serve, which was smashed back by Deborah to give KE the lead. KE scored a quick couple of points to take the lead higher, but TH came back explosively. KE fought the game out till the end, but could not salvage it. Thus, KE lost the second set and TH won the third match. The players shook hands as a gesture of good sportsmanship at the end of the match and walked out of the court.
Jann walked into the court for the fourth match. This was her first game and she had learnt squash through the past semester only. This went to show that IHG is not about competition, but pursuing different sports while enjoying yourself in the process. It was at this point that the match was graced by the presence of our Hall Master. He came down to watch the match and gave his full support to the team. He was greeted with a round of cheers from the KEVIIans. The player from TH seemed very experienced and good at the game. There were some really well placed drops from Jann, which won KE points. TH won both sets 11 – 1 and thus won the fourth match. The audience gave Jann a huge round of applause for her effort. The Hall Master also appreciated Jann’s effort and congratulated her.
The final match was played by Mabel. KE started. Her serves were strong and low, each reaching the corner of the court, making it nearly impossible for the opponent to play. It did not take her long to walk through the TH player and finish the set 11 – 1. The second set began and again KE took the lead almost immediately. With a score of 3 – 0 to KE, the game suddenly shifted direction and TH started winning points. This set was one of the most exciting sets in the match as it not only had the players on their feet, but also the entire audience. TH made a comeback bringing the score to 7 – 6. The game inched along as each player scored one point at a time taking the score to 11 – 11. This was the peak of excitement in and around Court 5, and pressure built upon the players as they struggled to score points. Finally the game ended 14 – 12, with KE winning the set and match.
Thus, TH just managed to overpower KE and won the match 3 – 2. It was really an amazing effort on the part of the KE female Squash team, since they had a number of beginners in their team. KE put their best foot forward, enjoyed the game and gave TH a strong fight. The level of excitement in the match was noteworthy, especially during Mabel’s final set. KE is proud of the girls’ effort and wishes them luck for their next match.
Come down to Squash Court 5 this Sat, 16th Jan to support the girls in their match against SH!

Sepak Takraw Preliminary Rounds: KE vs SH 0-3; KE vs KR 0-3
Writer: Jason Lun Leung
Photos by Liusi and Zhenglei
This Saturday, the KE VII sepak takraw team started their IHG campaign against Sheares and then Kent Ridge Hall.
The games were held in Sheares Hall, and the home advantage counted for a lot, as the players in orange raced to a decisive lead right from the start. Even from the first few rallies, we could see that this would be a tough one, and we lost the first match 21-9 and 21-3. The second match was not much better, and with the help of the supporters and home ground advantage, Sheares Hall won this one as well, 21-6 and 21-8. This effectively made the third and last match irrelevant, but we still sent out a strong team, keen to fight for our pride and honor. And this time, Junfeng, JK and Guan Long did put on a good fight. They started slowly but from 6-1, battled back to 8-9, before losing their first set 21-11. The second set, they briefly took the lead after some brilliant rallies, but still lost 21-18 in the end. We did get treated to some very nice skills from Guan Long, kills from Junfeng and JK even going to the net to attack and score. All in all, quite encouraging for the KE supporters.
The match against KR started with added anticipation from both sides then. Our first team lost their first set 21-8, but then won the next one 21-15. In the process, they treated us to some very nice rallies with Junfeng making some excellent headers. We still lost the match as KR won the third set, but we had been buoyed by winning the first set of the day. Even as we lost this match, seeing the team going for the kill and making a real game of it rekindled our slim hopes of making it to the semis.
And so, the second team we sent was anchored by JK as Tekong and joined by the very tall Arjun at the net, just arrived from Mauritius and reporting for IHG duty. Seeing Arjun on the court cheered many of the KE supporters, as they were fully aware of his worth and talent. And he did make an impact, lifted the whole team up and scored several times, fully taking advantage of his height. We fought with KR all the way until 18-20 but finally had to concede defeat. The second round was another entertaining affair, but we still lost 21-18 yet again. And so, we lost the game, and effectively ended our sepak takraw IHG for this year with this defeat.
However, this is nothing to be ashamed of. Our players made us proud, provided some very entertaining moments, displayed skills and determination and sportsmanship all in abundance. A good lesson on how to keep our heads high even in defeat, knowing that we tried our best, and need not have any regrets.

Palpable strains of energy and anticipation were present in the atmosphere of the SRC Track on the evening of 18th February. As the crowd chattered and waited eagerly for the race to begin, the KEVII Athletics team warmed up for the last fight of the season, the races that would mark the end of IHG 08/09.
First up was a 4 x 100m race by our ladies team, represented by Hui Ning, Feifan, Rachel and Tammy. As the first runner of the evening, Hui Ning started off well and left us in good stead for the rest of the race. As the crowd cheered, the baton was passed on to Feifan, and then to Rachel, who gave us a mini heart attack when she nearly dropped the baton. In this few precious seconds, the athletes from the other halls had sprinted and left KE behind. Rachel showed the true spirit of a sportswoman however, running her 100m with a strong burst of energy that lasted till she passed the baton on to Tammy, with KE in the 5th position. As the last runner, Tammy gave her all and sprinted all the way, completing the race for us with a 5th position.
Next was the 4 x 100m race by Pak Kin, Sin Hwee, Ramen and JK. Before the signal had been given to start the race, two athletes from the other halls started running. The crowd watched in dismay as Pak Kin shot off like a bullet, unaware of the false start that had occurred behind him. Much to the chagrin of the supporters, Pak Kin completed his 100m before the signal was given to inform the runners that there had been a false start. Nevertheless, our Co-Captain showed his grit by running his bestwhen the race started proper a few minutes later. The crowd cheered Pak Kin on as he raced to pass the baton to the 2nd runner, Sin Hwee. The baton was next passed to Ramen, and then subsequently to JK, who strained every nerve in him to overtake the athletes in front. To his credit, he overtook one of them, and KE emerged from this race in the 5th position.
Third then, was the 4 x 400m race for the females, this time represented by Jenny, Sharlene, Ginny and Qian Hong. Our girls faced really strong opponents in this race, and despite their best efforts, we ended the race in 6th position. It has to be said though, that the girls ran with all their might, all the while doggedly trying to catch up with the other athletes. In fact, Ginny closed the gap for KE, and as Qian Hong took over, she managed to overtake the 5th runner of the race. Most unfortunately, that athlete (the writer apologizes for not noticing which hall this athlete belongs to) overtook Qian Hong just before the finishing line, although Qian Hong did try her best to maintain her position, to the extent that she fell at the end of the race
Because of this great fighting spirit, the KEVIIians were proud of our girls, and boy did we cheer our lungs out to show our appreciation for their efforts.
Next was the 4 x 400m for the males, and Melvin, Nicholas, Yannick and Keefe ran for KE. This was a most exciting race to watch indeed, for Melvin ran with impressive speed and passed the baton over to Nicholas in 4th place, who then proceeded to close the gap and led KE into the 3rd position. The supporters were got really excited then, because next up was Yannick, who was our Hall’s star athlete. Sadly, Raffles Hall had a really good runner that caught up and overtook Yannick, and KE was back in 4th place. Our last runner was Keefe, who could be seen trying very hard to maintain our position in the race. As the runners behind him sped up, the atmosphere got really tense. Thankfully, Keefe raced steadily, and KE ended the race in 4th place.
Last of all, our valiant athletics competed in the medley. The medley is basically a race ran by 6 participants, with increasingly long distances to cover. Tammy, Yong Shen, Pak Kin, Feifan, Irene and Patrick ran 100m, 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m and 800m respectively. This was the most interesting race of the evening, as KE vacillated between 5th and 6th place throughout, eventually landing at the 5th place, thanks to Patrick who sprinted with all he had for KE.
And with that, the last event of IHG 08/09 was over. Although we didn’t win any medals, our runners showed true sportsmanship and displayed the never-say-die spirit of us KEVIIians! So, well done to all of you athletes, KE is proud of you!

Before this 2nd preliminary competition with Kent Ridge Hall, both them and us had actually been secured places in the semi-finals, as the other opponent of our group, Sheares Hall, was defeated in 2 preliminary matches earlier (Sheares vs KE : 2-3 , Sheares vs KR : 0-5).
This somehow eased the psychological burden on the players. KE players did their very best and performed so well that we won the victory with a final result of 3-1.
The competition started with a doubles game. Beatrice and Shuling showed great team-work spirit. Their consistent stamina was so inexorable that they defeated the opponent with 21-12 in the 1st set, and 21-12 in the 2nd set.
Next up was the singles game played by Siti Mastura from KE. Siti is a freshman, but also an experienced badminton player. She dominated the court most of the time, so much so that the opponent could hardly make any lethal counter attacks. Siti’s swift and fierce attack complementing with her good defense pushed her forward to a victory of 21-3 and 21-5.
The following singles player is Julia Lee. Julia was a substitute for the game, but she showed us her high spirit and persistency throughout the whole match (yep, just like what she always did as an excellent basketball player!). Sadly, she lost the game with 11-21 and 7-21.
The whole match was drawn to an end when our last doubles players, Janice and Laura, won their game after a tough tug-of-war with KR doubles team. Both teams unleashed their skills and techniques to fight for the final victory. Janice and Laura was lagging behind during the 1st game as their strategies seemed not to work out smooth, and some mistakes were made. They lost the 1st game with 16-21 but things began to look up from the 2nd game onwards. They won the 2nd set with 21-17; and with this surge of confidence, they played steadily and won the 3rd set with 21-18.
After 3 preliminary rounds, King Edward VII hall sits at 1st place in the group of three, followed by Kent Ridge hall, while Sheares Hall was eliminated. We will meet the 2nd best from the other group in the coming semi-finals. Till then, congratulations, and job well done to the badminton girls!!

It was a chilly night with occasional strong gusts of wind. However, the ominous weather did not affect the mood of the quietly confident tennis girls who were getting ready for their semi-final matches.
The three singles matches were played by Geraldine, Jennyline and Jeanaline, with Geraldine and Jennyline starting first. Just a few minutes into their matches and it was already clear that they would have no problems defeating their opponents. Geraldine breezed through her match, dropping only 1 game, while Jennyline crushed her opponent (6-0, 6-0) with her powerful aces and deep cross-court returns.
Next up were the doubles matches, with Jene and Fang Chee forming one pair and Wei Tse and Mae Yue the other. Jene and Fang Chee were up against the stronger Sheares pair. They battled hard, but ultimately it was Sheares that came away victorious. Nevertheless, Jene and Fang Chee managed to keep their cool and supported each other well through the match, and they definitely didn’t go down without a tough fight!
Mae Yue and Wei Tse took the lead early in their doubles match and played steadily, never dropping a single game in both sets. With their victory, a spot in the finals for the KE tennis girls was firmly secured!
Finally, Jeanaline took to the courts for the final singles match. By then, Sheares’ hopes of reaching the finals were thoroughly crushed, but Jeanaline still put up a stunning performance by clinching the first set easily (6-0). However, due to time constraints, the match was cut short and thus ended the semi-finals for the tennis girls. There was no doubt as to what the outcome of the final singles match would have been though, should there have been enough time to finish the match.
Hence, despite valiant efforts by the Sheares tennis team, the powerful KE tennis girls still emerged victorious and will be going on to battle for the championship in the finals! Congratulations to the KE tennis girls and all the very best for the finals!
Some thoughts from Jennyline Fan, one of our wonderful tennis girls:
For our singles match, the opponents were really at a disadvantage because all 3 of us (Geraldine, Jennyline and Jeanaline) are IVP players, while they are not. As for the doubles, our 1st pair of Fang Chee and Jene put up a good fight although they were playing the stronger Sheares pair. However, it was quite a tough match. Our 2nd pair of Wei Tse and Mae Yue played well too, and took the lead from the start, so it was not exactly a tough match for them to handle.
I think that our players’ strengths comes from the fact that we can keep our cool, and remain supportive of each other, especially for the doubles matches.
During the matches, there were a few disputes about the line calls (whether the ball was in or out), but these were quickly and efficiently settled by replaying the point. Jeanaline’s match, the 3rd singles, was cut short to just 1 set due to time constraints. There was a tie between the Kent Ridge and Temasek teams’ game, so it was taking a very long time. Since we have already won 3-1, we let them use the courts to finish their game.
Though the Sheares team did not have any IVP players, they can be considered a rather strong non-IVP team. Their players were really not bad, and gave us a good fight last night.
